Isaiah 61:1-2a

Prophecy given: The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Devotional:

Our God is the God of broken people. Why else would He choose the Israelites as His People, a group of people who had been slaves for 400 years! You’d think He would have chosen a more respectable nation, a more powerful nation, to announce Himself to the world. But not our God, because He goes after broken people, people who are alone, people who have no one else, people who could use a little good news.

Is it any surprise then, that the Promised One came to people who were broken and brought them good news? Should it be surprising that He came to set the captive free, give sight to the blind, and bring light to those in darkness? But the sad thing is, so many people don’t hear this good news… because they don’t think they need it. They don’t see themselves among the broken. That’s why God so often allows us to become broken, so that He can get our attention! Are you ready to hear God’s good news? Because it’s in our brokenness that we see the truth: that our God is the God of broken people and He has some good news for us. Hallelujah!
