Colossians 3:23-24 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

In the context of this Letter from Paul to the Church in Colosse, this verse was written to define how the slaves of this period were to work (verses 3:22-25). If God’s will for a slave was that he/she be obedient to their human master and that they work as if they are working for God, then what would be said of you and I?

This verse tells us that God wants us to put our soul into our work, as the work we are doing is for Him. To put our soul into our work means that we are to do this with enthusiasm, no matter what job God has called us to do. We may not like our job. We may feel we are merely completing a menial task. We may even feel that we are not dignified by what we do. Yet, we must remember that serving the Lord is what provides us true dignity. With this, we need not look to those around us for validation because our reward comes from God in eternity.

Prayer Topic:

Reflect on how you are serving God in all you do. As you pray, open your heart to God… and listen. Ask Him to change your heart to be more and more like His own; that you might work with all your heart, for your Lord.
